Unconfirmed Information gathered independently has hinted the GNN that effort efforts are said to be underway for the use of the National Identification Card in the upcoming 2023, October General and Presidential Elections in place of the regular voters’ registration cards being issued by the National Elections Commission (NEC) during each elections year.

The National Identification Registry Act was established in 2011 by the Liberian Government to maintain and administer the country’s National Biometric Identification system (NBIS); a modern computerized database containing information for all Liberian citizens and residents.

Sources closed to the GNN also revealed that modalities are currently being worked out aimed at making sure that all of those who have obtained the ‘Citizens ID Cards are eligible to vote in the pending 2023 elections, a situation that seems to baffle many Liberians as to what gave rise to such decision.

Some political analysts who spoke to the GNN said if this information mentioned herein is true, it will be a violation of the elections laws of Liberia, noting that the National Elections Commission (NEC) is clothe with the authority to provide voters’ cards and other related instruments during these elections.

Efforts by this outlet to contact the Media Consultant at the NIR, Mr. Gevon Smith via mobile phone to ascertain the facts regarding this information proved unsuccessful.
